Network cable quality assessment & testing standards
It is divided into visual initial inspection, physical structure verification, simple practical tests, national standard professional performance indicators, and common standards for export. It is suitable for factory self-inspection, purchase inspection, and explanation to foreign customers.

1. Appearance & Outer Skin (Quick Visual Judgment)
Printed labels are complete and clear.
Outer skin printing: Category (CAT5e/CAT6/CAT6A), AWG wire gauge, UTP/STP/SFTP, flame retardant grade, manufacturer, certification mark.
Low-quality cables: Unclear fonts, missing parameters, falsely labeled CAT6 as actually being Super 5.
Outer sheath material
High-quality: PVC/LSZH (low smoke and halogen-free), good elasticity when pinched, not prone to whitening and cracking when bent;
Low-quality: Recycled materials, soft and sticky, white marks appear after one fold, prone to cracking at low temperatures.
Wire diameter and outer diameter
CAT6: 23 AWG, cable outer diameter ≈ 5.5 - 6.0 mm
CAT6A: 23 AWG, cable outer diameter ≈ 7.0 - 7.5 mm
The mislabeling of wire diameter is a common pitfall in the industry. For the same type of network cable, the thinner the core wire, the worse the performance.
2. Peeling to see the internal structure (Core Judgement Point)
Conductor copper core
High-quality: Oxygen-free copper, copper color is bright and reddish;
Poor quality: Copper-clad aluminum, copper-clad iron, white, large resistance, reduced transmission distance.
Simple: Use a knife to scrape the wire core. If the interior is white, it is copper-clad aluminum.
Cross frame (Required for CAT6)
CAT6 must have an isolation cross frame inside to separate 4 pairs of wires, reducing crosstalk;
Cables without a cross frame are non-standard and cannot reach the rated bandwidth.
CAT6A cross frame is larger and thicker.
Twist distance of wire pairs
The looseness of the 4 pairs of twisted wires is different, and the density of each pair of winding is different, used to counteract crosstalk;
Low-quality cables have sparse twist distance and almost the same number of winding circles for 4 pairs.
Shielded type (STP/SFTP)
Must have a complete aluminum foil shielding layer + ground wire; thin aluminum foil, damaged, no ground wire = shielding failure.
3. Simple practical self-test (No need for professional instruments)
Conduction test: Network cable tester, all 8 cores connected, no missing cores, no wrong sequence.
⚠️ 8-core connection does not mean the cable is compliant; it can only prove there are no broken wires. Many non-standard cables have 8-core connection but cannot reach the nominal bandwidth.
Rate measurement
CAT5e Super 5: Actual stable gigabit (1000 Mbps)
CAT6 Six: Gigabit stable, short-distance supports 10 Gigabit
CAT6A Super Six: Stable 10 Gigabit 10Gbps
Test: Connect the computer to the switch, check the network card negotiation rate, measure the speed for large file copying.
Bend resistance durability: Repeat bending dozens of times, the outer skin does not crack, the core wire does not break.
4. Key indicators of domestic national standard testing (GB/T 18015)
Table
Test items Explanation
Direct Current Resistance 23AWG, per 100 meters ≤ 9.5Ω. Excessive resistance = poor copper material
Return Loss RL Reflects impedance matching. The higher the value, the better. Abnormal impedance will cause packet loss
Near-End Crosstalk NEXT The most important indicator. Interference between wire pairs. Poor network cables fail to meet this standard in terms of near-end crosstalk
Attenuation Signal loss. The longer the cable, the greater the attenuation
Impedance 100Ω ± 15Ω. Standard impedance for network cables
The above items can only be fully tested with a network cable comprehensive tester (Fluke). The tester cannot measure near-end crosstalk or attenuation.
Many network cables are 8-core, but the NEXT near-end crosstalk is不合格 (unqualified). There is lag and packet loss under high bandwidth.
V. Common Standards for Foreign Trade Export
European Union
CPR: Building Wiring Flame Retardant Classification (Dca/Eca/Fca);
LVD: Low Voltage Directive;
RoHS: Restriction of Hazardous Substances;
GPSR: EU General Product Safety Regulation.
North America
TIA-568-C.2: Industry performance standard for network cables;
UL certification: Flame retardant, wire safety.
Six. Quick summary of inspection rules
Check that the printed characters on the outer skin are complete, not blurry or mislabeled;
CAT6 must have a cross-shaped frame;

Scrape the copper core to see if it is oxygen-free copper, reject copper-clad aluminum;
The tester can only test for continuity, continuity does not mean qualification;
For Gigabit applications, a Fluke tester must be used to conduct a complete link test.
