The core differences between shielded network cables (STP/SFTP) and unshielded network cables (UTP)

1. Structural differences
Unshielded UTP: Only 8 twisted pairs of wires, with an outer PVC sheath, without a metal shielding layer.
Shielded network cables: Additional metal shielding materials are added inside, divided into two types
STP: Each pair of wire cores is individually wrapped with metal foil;
SFTP (FTP): Each pair of wire cores is foil shielded + overall outer metal foil + metal ground wire for current diversion, the most commonly used in international trade.
Key point: Shielded network cables must be properly grounded; without grounding, the shielding effect is almost ineffective.
2. Anti-interference ability
UTP non-shielded: Weak anti-interference ability. Suitable for ordinary offices, homes, and scenarios with less environmental interference; the cable should not be close to high-voltage wires, frequency converters, industrial equipment.
SFTP/STP shielded: Strong anti-electromagnetic interference. Suitable for industrial robots, strong power environments in computer rooms, security monitoring, and engineering wiring with strong EMI interference.
3. Performance and transmission
Under the same specifications (Cat5e/Cat6/Cat6A):
Ideal grounding condition: Shielded network cable crosstalk is smaller, and long-distance transmission is more stable;
Poor grounding: The shielding layer will instead become an "antenna", introducing additional interference, and the performance is worse than UTP.
4. Construction & Cost
UTP: Soft, easy to bend, simple to press crystal heads, low cost, convenient for wiring construction.
Shielded network cables: Relatively hard, high requirements for processing and connection techniques, crystal heads also need to be of shielded type; material cost is higher; engineering requires grounding construction.
