How to choose the right network cable for yourself?
Wire type selection simple approach: First, consider bandwidth requirements → distance → usage environment, then choose category, and whether to use shielding.
I. Step 1: Determine network speed requirements (most crucial)
Note: The bottleneck is often not the network cable, but the router / optical modem. For example, if your home only has gigabit broadband, there is no need to buy seven-category or eight-category cables.
Home gigabit broadband (most common)
Recommendation: Super five-category CAT5e or six-category CAT6
CAT5e: The most cost-effective, can run at full gigabit speed, sufficient for ordinary internet, TV, and surveillance
CAT6: Has more margin, suitable for NAS, large file transfer for multiple devices, and reserved for upgrading to 10-gigabit internal network
Not recommended: Five-category CAT5 (maximum 100 Mbps, outdated and obsolete)
10-gigabit internal network (NAS high-speed copying, 10-gigabit switch)
Short distance < 55 meters: CAT6 can run 10-gigabit
55 - 100 meters: To achieve stable 10-gigabit speed, CAT6A is necessary
> 100 meters: Twisted-pair network cables are not enough, use fiber + optical module
Tip: 100 meters is the theoretical limit. Poor-quality cables will actually shrink. Long distances should preferably choose brand pure copper.
II. Step 2: Look at wiring distance
≤ 55 meters: CAT6 can run 10-gigabit
55 - 100 meters: To achieve stable 10-gigabit speed, CAT6A is necessary

Indoor cables vs Outdoor cables
Indoor ordinary network cables: Can only be used indoors, cannot be exposed to sunlight or rain
Outdoor wiring (on the exterior wall, on the outdoor pole): Outdoor water-resistant network cables (with PE waterproof outer skin, some with Kevlar anti-tensile), ordinary network cables will crack and get wet after being exposed outdoors for a few months.
IV. Step 4: Material (key to avoiding pitfalls! Many network cable pitfalls are here)
Priority: oxygen-free copper, followed by copper-clad copper; Avoid copper-clad aluminum, copper-clad steel:
Copper-clad aluminum: High resistance, severe signal attenuation over long distances, PoE monitoring is prone to unstable power supply, short lifespan
Simple differentiation: Oxygen-free copper network cables feel soft, the copper core color is reddish; Copper-clad aluminum is white and hard

VI. Common Misconceptions Reminder
It is not the case that the higher the category, the better: Buying category 7 or 8 cables for home gigabit broadband is a waste. Most category 7 cables are shielded cables, and it is difficult to achieve good grounding in home decoration.
"Category 7 connectors" have many advantages, but ordinary household CAT6 is sufficient.
Network cables are part of the entire system: The optical modem, router, switch, and connectors all need to be matched. Changing the network cable alone cannot increase the speed.
