How to Choose the Right Network Cable
Remember the core logic first: bandwidth, distance, usage scenario, interface, shielding. The selection methods for home, office, and engineering applications are different.

1. Network Cable Categories (Most Important)

Common home 10G broadband: Six Category CAT6 sufficient; if you need high-speed internal copying with NAS → choose Super Six Category CAT6A.
Note: Not all CAT6 cables are qualified just because they are labeled as CAT6; it depends on the copper core; inferior cables labeled as CAT6 are actually CAT5.
II. Shielded vs Unshielded
UTP Unshielded: No metal shielding layer, cheap, flexible for wiring, most home use selects this, enough for interference-free home use without strong electrical density.
STP/SFTP Shielded: With metal foil shielding, anti-interference, suitable for: same pipe as strong electrical wires, factory data center, industrial equipment, outdoor.
Shielded network cables require both ends of the connectors to be shielded and grounded; otherwise, the shielding is just a decoration, avoid blindly using shielding for ordinary home wiring.
III. Copper Core Material (Key Avoidance Points)
Oxygen-free copper (OFC): Best, low resistance, stable signal, priority selection.
Copper-clad aluminum CCA: Cheap, high resistance, prone to packet loss and insufficient network speed over long distances, not recommended for pre-installation for long-term use, can be used for temporary short connections but not advisable.
Avoid copper-clad aluminum for home pre-installation! It's very difficult to replace later.
IV. Wire Gauge (Wire Core Thickness)
Common CAT6: 23-24AWG, the smaller the number, the thicker the wire, the more stable the transmission distance.
26AWG thin wire: The wire is softer, suitable for patch cords (router to computer), not suitable for long-distance pre-installation.
Short patch cords (1-3 meters) are fine with soft thin wires; for pre-installation in walls, choose a thicker 23-24AWG.
V. Distance Reference
10G network: Super 5 Category / CAT6 recommended ≤ 100 meters; beyond will cause attenuation.
100G network CAT6A: Up to 50-100 meters, the longer the distance, the lower the rate.
Between rooms in the home, 40 meters is completely fine.
VI. How to directly select scenarios (Quick Solution)
Home decoration pre-installation (pipe in the wall, one-time)
Priority: Super Six Category CAT6A UTP oxygen-free copper 23AWG
Even if you are currently a 10G broadband, upgrading to 100G internal network in the future does not require replacing the line.
If the budget is limited, the minimum is CAT6 CAT6 oxygen-free copper, do not exceed CAT5.
Short patch cords (router, computer, NAS between, 1-5 meters)
Normal internet access: CAT6 CAT6

NAS high-speed copying: Super Six Category CAT6A, you can buy soft 26AWG finished patch cords.
Industrial / Monitoring / Data Center
Strong electrical interference: Choose SFTP shielded Super Six Category, remember to shield and ground.
POE cameras: Oxygen-free copper is very important, POE copper-clad aluminum is prone to insufficient power supply.
Outdoor use
Buy outdoor water-resistant network cables, with PE waterproof outer skin, ordinary indoor network cables will quickly age and crack when used outdoors.
VII. Avoiding Pitfalls Reminder
Just looking at the packaging printing is not useful; some inferior cables falsely label as CAT6; try to choose regular brands.
The connector also needs to match: CAT6 cables use CAT6 connectors, otherwise 10G cannot run.
Do not bend the network cable forcefully; right-angle dead bends will damage the wire pair and affect the speed.
The network speed is not fast enough, it may not be due to the network cable. It also depends on whether the router and network card are gigabit / 2.5G.
Summary
For ordinary home installation: Super 6-category CAT6A non-sheathed oxygen-free copper, one-step solution.
For temporary short jumper cables: Category 6 is sufficient.
Do not buy copper-clad aluminum. Do not blindly choose Category 7 or sheathed cables for home decoration.
