How to determine if the network cable meets the standards?
1. Check the outer label
The most straightforward method is to inspect the printed label on the outer layer of the network cable:
CAT5: Only supports 100Mbps, not up to standard.
CAT5e (Super 5): Supports 1000Mbps, is the lowest entry standard.
CAT6 (Sixth Type): Supports 1000Mbps and can support short-distance 10G transmission, with better performance.
Caution: Products that only label "1000Mbps" without "CAT5e" or higher labels may be falsely labeled or of poor quality.
2. Check the physical structure
Disassembling or measuring can further verify:
Wire core diameter: The wire core of high-quality CAT5e should be ≥ 0.48mm, while that of CAT6 is usually in the range of 0.55-0.58mm.
Internal structure: CAT6 cables usually have a cross-shaped frame, which effectively isolates the wire pairs and reduces crosstalk; CAT5e is simply twisted.
Material: High-quality cables use oxygen-free copper, while inferior cables may use copper-clad aluminum (which is prone to oxidation and has high resistance).
3. Equipment testing (Most reliable)
Theoretical support requires actual testing for verification:
Required equipment: Gigabit router, Gigabit network card computer, the cable to be tested.
Testing method:
Connect the cable to the computer and router.
Turn off other devices to reduce interference.
Use tools like Speedtest to measure the speed.
Standard for compliance: The download speed of wired connection should be continuously stable at 900Mbps or above (i.e., 90% of the contracted bandwidth). If the speed drops sharply or is far below 900Mbps, the cable may not meet the standard.
4. Other precautions
Length: The standard transmission distance is 100 meters. For longer distances, repeaters are required.
Interference: In strong electromagnetic environments, it is recommended to use shielded cables (STP/FTP).
Connector type: It must be an 8-core fully connected type. Poor-quality 4-core connection methods will cause the speed to collapse.
Summary: When purchasing, prioritize choosing CAT5e or CAT6. Make a comprehensive judgment through the inspection of the outer label, physical structure, and equipment testing. A speed of ≥ 900Mbps in the actual test is the key criterion.
