List of practical steps for Standard Connection of Category 6 network Cables (Cat6)
Applicable scenarios: Pressing of RJ45 crystal heads for unshielded (UTP)/shielded (STP/SFTP) Category 6 network cables. By default, T568B cable sequence is used (commercial mainstream).
I. Prepare tools and materials
Materials: Category 6 network cable, Category 6 dedicated RJ45 crystal head (with built-in divider, compatible with Category 6 thick wire diameter), shielded crystal head (only for shielded network cable)
Tools: Network cable stripper, Category 6 network cable crimping pliers, network cable tester (optional, for detecting continuity)
Ii. Specific Practical Steps (Direct connection method, both ends are T568B)
Step 1: Stripping the wire (Key point: Do not damage the insulation layer of the wire core)
Take a section of Category 6 network cable, hold the cable 1.5 to 2cm away from the end with a wire stripper, and rotate the wire stripper to cut open the outer sheath.
Gently pull out the outer sheath to expose the four pairs of twisted wires inside (orange-white - orange, green-white - green, blue-white - blue, brown-white - brown).
If it is a shielded Category 6 network cable: After removing the sheath, you will see the aluminum foil shielding layer and the braided mesh shielding layer. Fold the shielding layer backward to avoid interfering with the core wire.
Step 2: Line Sorting (Key point: Strictly follow the T568B line sequence)
Split the 4 pairs of twisted wires and arrange them in the order of T568B: orange-white → orange → green-white → blue → blue-white → green → brown-white → brown.
When sorting, note: Keep a slight twist pitch for each pair of twisted wires and do not straighten them completely (Category 6 network cables have a denser twist pitch, and excessive straightening will damage the anti-interference performance).
If the network cable has built-in separators (unique to Category 6 network cables, used to fix the positions of the 4 pairs of twisted wires), the wire core needs to be inserted into the corresponding slots of the separators to enhance the anti-crosstalk capability.
Step 3: Trim the wire cores neatly (ensure good contact after insertion into the crystal head)
Use the wire cutting edge of the wire crimping pliers to cut the 8 arranged wire cores vertically and neatly. The length of the wire cores should be approximately 1.2cm (just touching the top of the crystal head).
After cutting the wires, check the wire sequence to ensure there is no disorder and avoid subsequent rework.
Step 4: Insert the crystal head (make sure the wire core is at the top)
Take the six types of dedicated RJ45 crystal heads, with the clips facing down and the metal contacts pointing towards yourself. Insert the neatly trimmed wire cores parallel into the interior of the crystal heads.
When inserting, push hard to the bottom to ensure that each wire core touches the top of the crystal head (the copper core of the wire core can be seen from the tail of the crystal head), and that the wire sequence corresponds one-to-one with the pins of the crystal head.
If it is a shielded network cable: Wrap the folded shielding layer around the tail of the crystal head, and then put on the shielding shell of the shielded crystal head to ensure good contact between the shielding layer and the shielding shell of the crystal head.
Step 5: Secure the press line (apply sufficient force to avoid poor contact)
Insert the crystal head with the wire core inserted into the Category 6 dedicated wire crimping port of the wire crimping pliers (note: The Category 5 wire crimping port is not compatible and may damage the crystal head).
Hold the handle of the wire crimping pliers tightly with both hands and press it down firmly (just hear a "click" sound), so that the metal contact of the crystal head pierces through the insulation layer of the wire core and makes close contact with the copper core. At the same time, the buckle at the tail of the crystal head fixes the sheath of the network cable.
Step 6: Press the other end (repeat steps 1-5)
According to the same T568B wire sequence, press the crystal head at the other end of the network cable to complete the straight-through wire production.
Step 7: Continuity Test (Optional, verify whether the wiring is successful)
Insert the crystal heads at both ends of the network cable into the two ports of the network cable tester respectively, and then turn on the power of the tester.
If the 8 indicator lights of the tester light up in the sequence of 1→2→3→4→5→6→7→8, it indicates that the wiring is correct and the on-off is normal. If a certain indicator light does not light up or the sequence is out of order, the crystal head needs to be cut off and re-pressed.
Iii. Key Points to Note
Category 6 network cables must use Category 6 dedicated crystal heads and crimping ports. The diameter of Category 5 crystal heads is too small to accommodate the thick core of Category 6, which may lead to poor contact.
When stripping the wire, do not scratch the insulation layer of the wire core; otherwise, it may cause a short circuit or signal attenuation.
When organizing the wires, retain the twist pitch of the twisted pair. After stripping, the exposed part of the wire core should not exceed 2cm; otherwise, the anti-interference ability will be reduced.
