Standard Guidelines for Judging Network Cable Applications
To determine the appropriate scenario and standard for a network cable, mainly consider the following 6 dimensions:

1. Based on transmission rate / bandwidth requirements → Select category
Table
Category Bandwidth Maximum Speed Typical Distance Applicable Scenarios
Cat3 16 MHz 10 Mbps 100 m Voice / Telephone (RJ11/RJ12), old buildings
Cat5e 100 MHz 1000 Mbps 100 m Home, small and medium-sized office, 100/1000 Mbps desktop
Cat6 250 MHz 1000 Mbps (supports 10 Gbps within 55 m) 100 m Gigabit mainstay, POE monitoring, small data center
Cat6A 500 MHz 10 Gbps 100 m 10 Gbps cabling, data center Top-of-Rack
Cat7 600 MHz 10 Gbps 100 m High interference environment, high shielding requirements in industrial / data center
Cat8 2000 MHz 25 Gbps/40 Gbps 30 m Data center short link, server interconnection
Judgment rule: First ask the customer about the required bandwidth, then consider the length of the cabling. If it exceeds 30 m, don't choose Cat8; if 40 Gbps is required, only Cat8 can be chosen and it should be ≤ 30 m.
II. Determine the shielding type based on the electromagnetic environment
UTP (unshielded): Ordinary office, home, low interference environment, low cost
FTP (aluminum foil single shielding): Mild interference environment, such as in the same trough as power lines
SFTP/STP (double-layer shielding): Industrial sites, elevator carriages, strong electric area in data center, rail transit
Shielded wires must be grounded at both ends; otherwise, they will amplify the interference
III. Determine the outer skin / structure based on the usage environment
Table
Environment Outer Skin Requirements Typical Products
Indoor ordinary PVC/CM Conventional patch cords, horizontal wiring
Indoor flame-retardant / densely populated areas LSZH (low smoke and halogen-free) Subways, airports, hospitals
Indoor backbone / ventilation ducts CMP (plenum grade) Mandatory in the US market
Outdoor overhead / buried PE + water-blocking tape / steel tape armor Outdoor network cables, ADSS optical cables
Elevator running track High flexibility, anti-tensile, with steel wire Elevator running cable
Industrial robots High flexibility, resistant to bending, oil-resistant Drag chain cables, M12 industrial connector cables
Security POE Pure copper, wire diameter ≥ 23AWG Specialized cables for surveillance
Four. According to power supply requirements → Determine wire diameter
POE power supply scenarios (cameras, AP, telephones):
23AWG: Supports high-power POE+ (30W), low heat generation, recommended Cat6 and above
24AWG: Standard POE (15W), Cat5e commonly used
26/28AWG: Only short-distance patch cords, not suitable for long-distance POE
Copper-clad aluminum (CCA) is not recommended for POE, large voltage drop, high heat generation
Five. According to industry / region → Determine compliance standards

Market Core Standards Approval Requirements
China GB 50311 / YD/T Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (entry into the market), 3C (partial)
USA / North America TIA/EIA-568.2-D ETL/UL, CMP/CMR flame retardant grade
EU ISO/IEC 11801 CE, RoHS, REACH, CPR flame retardant
Middle East / Southeast Asia Refer to ISO or TIA frequently Usually requires third-party test report
