The function of network cables
In simple terms, network cables are the physical cables used to connect various network devices, enabling them to "chat" with each other and transfer data. They are like the physical lanes on an information superhighway, responsible for transporting data from one end to the other.
Specifically, network cables have the following core functions:
1. Connecting devices to form a local area network (LAN)
This is the most basic function of network cables. They can connect home computers, televisions, game consoles, or multiple computers in the office, forming a LAN. Once connected, these devices can share files, share printers, and even play online games within the LAN.
2. Connecting routers or optical modems to access the internet
The routers or optical modems we use at home usually need to be connected to the broadband interface on the wall (or directly connect the optical modem and router) to receive the network signal provided by the operator and distribute it to other devices in the home.
3. Providing a more stable and faster network than Wi-Fi
Although Wi-Fi is convenient, network cables have an irreplaceable advantage in data transmission:
Fast speed: The current mainstream Gigabit network cables (Cat5e, Cat6) can easily reach the gigabit bandwidth, and high-end Cat6a or Cat7 cables can even support 10-gigabit networks, with a speed limit far exceeding that of ordinary Wi-Fi.
Low latency: For playing competitive online games, watching high-definition videos, or conducting video conferences, network cables can avoid the common lag, disconnections, and latency fluctuations of Wi-Fi, providing a smoother experience.
Strong resistance to interference: Network cables have a shielding layer inside, making them less susceptible to microwave ovens, Bluetooth devices, or neighbor Wi-Fi interference, ensuring very stable data transmission.
4. Power supply function
Many network cables also support a technology called PoE, which is "Ethernet power supply". This means that network cables can not only transmit data but also supply power to devices simultaneously. For example, you may have seen wireless APs, surveillance cameras, and even some smart lighting in companies, which often only need to plug in a network cable to solve both the network and power issues at once, which is very convenient.
