Differences Between Automotive Ethernet Cables (for NEV) & Household LAN Cables

一、Structure & Wire Standard
Home cable(Cat5e/Cat6)
Four pairs of twisted copper, multi-pair structure, AWG22–24 common, designed for indoor room temperature environment.
Automotive vehicle cable(100BASE-T1 / 1000BASE-T1)
Only single pair twisted, mostly AWG24~26 thinner solid/tinned copper; ultra-narrow outer diameter for narrow vehicle wiring harness layout.
二、Shielding
Household: UTP unshielded mainstream, partial FTP/STP for engineering; weak anti-interference.
Automotive: Most adopt STP fully shielded (aluminum foil + braided shield), resist strong EMI from high-voltage battery, motor, inverter inside EV; essential for engine compartment & chassis layout.
三、Working Temperature & Material
Home: PVC outer sheath, working temp 0℃~60℃ only, cannot withstand high/low extreme temperature.
Auto: Cross-linked PE / TPE / XLPO automotive grade insulation; operating range -40℃ ~ +125℃, resist engine high heat, winter low temperature, engine oil & chemical corrosion.
四、Transmission Protocol & Bandwidth
Household: IEEE802.3ab(1000BASE-T), parallel 4-pair transmission.
Automotive: Automotive Ethernet IEEE802.3bw/bu (T1 standard), single pair differential transmission, support TSN time-sensitive network, PoDL power supply over same cable (data + power in one wire for onboard sensors).
五、Anti-vibration & Mechanical Performance
Home: Fixed indoor laying, no frequent shaking requirement.
Auto: Pass vehicle shock & torsion test, anti-friction, resistant to long-term vehicle bump vibration inside car body.
六、Application Scene
Household: Home broadband, router, desktop network connection.
New Energy Vehicle: ADAS camera/LiDAR, intelligent cockpit multi-screen, BMS battery monitoring, domain controller interconnection, OTA high-speed upgrade, fast charging communication.

Auto Ethernet cable uses single-pair shielded structure, high temperature resistant TPE jacket, wide temp -40~125°C, anti-high voltage electromagnetic interference, compliant with T1 automotive protocol for new energy car; household CAT6 is 4 pairs PVC cable only for indoor network.
